Without Your Existence : PHOBIAN Exhibition (2019)
FEAR is an inevitable concept that we have to face at a certain point in our lives. It is an inescapable aspect of our lives that we have no authority over. Our very IDENTITY stems from the concept of fear; a concept so abstract and distant, yet also concrete and imminent/ubiquitous. It may be from a significant experience that triggered our SENSES, or it may simply be an unexplainable and inherent trait we are born with. It is the opposite of trust or acceptance. Also, It is usually the things we hide from.
My abstract art series “Phobian” is my interpretation of the four common phobias that I personally can relate to: traumatophobia (fear of war), spectrophobia (fear of mirrors), acrophobia (fear of heights) and trypanophobia (fear of needles). These phobias dwell in the everyday lives of innumerable individuals. I created different interpretations of phobias, through layering acrylic paint, fabrics, everyday objects, and photography, between resin sealants, creating a wet, 3-dimensional feel.
Through my project “Phobian” I hope to highlight the numerous forms of the feelings of discomfort and FEAR that come with one’s perception of the phobia.
